Author Peter Grant hosts an illustrated talk on his book Wish You Were Here - Life on Vancouver Island in Historical Postcards, at the Campbell River Museum, Thursday April 10 at 7 pm. Real - life postcards were an art form of the early part of the last century; the superb images provide lovely insights into the social history of Vancouver Island during a fascinating, long - vanished era.
"Everywhere on Vancouver Island, sections of our shared past shine out -- in silhouette of a growing forest, a cluster of signs, a railway bed in a mossy wood, bitten off stumps of pilings, faded letters on abandoned warehouses." All this was captured by artists and photographers in the early 20th century and placed on postcards.
A Vancouver Island native, Peter Grant offers a fascinating glimpse of a bygone era through postcards in his book Wish You Were Here - Life on Vancouver Island in Historical Postcards. In those days post cards were made by hand and often used as bookmarks or souvenirs of fond voyages and passed around. Each picture has a story to tell, giving us a unique look into the social history of the early 20th century.
Don't miss this intriguing look into our past. Lecture cost is $6 and pre-registration is recommended. Call the Museum for more details: 287-3103.
